How to achieve work-life balance as a director?

Making important decisions, managing a company, holding serious responsibilities can be all-consuming. We all know that it is challenging to find a healthy work-life balance, however crucial it may be. It is not easy to change ingrained habits, and help leaders to achieve better balance in their job and private life. Following are some useful tips that can help you to do this.

1. Plan and prioritise

Focus, self-discipline and organisation are essential for achieving your goals. Consider setting aside some time in the morning. Use this time for planning the day ahead.

Make a list of your jobs to be done, prioritise, delegate, and don’t spend time on the tedious jobs you tend to put off. The better you are at organizing yourself, the more efficient you will be.

2. Learn to delegate

Delegation of tasks is crucial. If you don’t learn to let go and delegate work to others, you will end up chained to your work without any rest, then completely burnt-out. Do what only you can do, and delegate the tasks you don’t have time for.

3. Proper working environment

Working from home can be more time and cost-effective, but it can have an adverse effect on your work-life balance. It can be difficult to switch off and focus on your family, when you finish your job. Working from home can also give the feeling to your family members that you are available, so they may keep on interrupting you. Try to avoid working from home, or make it clear to your family that they cannot disturb you in certain hours, and stick to your working schedule.

4. Some time off

It can be challenging to find the perfect time for taking some time off, but it is just essential. Getting some job done in advance before your holiday can cover the potential loss of income and help you to manage your job. For the remaining part, train your staff to get your job ready while you are away. Planning a gap in your commitments in advance can also work.

In order to perform in your job effectively, you have to recharge yourself and find the perfect work-life balance.
